Fun with Animals!!!

Lately I've been taking these quick trips over to the Los Angeles Zoo, which is no more than a five minute drive from where I currently work. It's a damn good excuse to get away from the office and get some air for an hour or so, but more importantly it gives me the frequent opportunity to draw and caricature live animals... This Giraffe I felt had a VERY muscular neck...so I thought I'd play with it a little.
Not a lot of exaggeration done here...just a simple perspective study.
Being a born and raised Floridian, I've seen a LOT of alligators in my day...but NEVER have I seen one as fat as this fella' was...
...I wounder what they've been feeding him?

These two Silver-backs above were drawn very loosely based(obviously) from a picture in a book I saw at Barnes & Noble. It's just me getting ready for the Gorilla exhibit that's about to open this next month. I can't wait!! :D

My take on the Historic Figure's Larger than life persona. I began developing the character for a short film about two years ago, and although the film got put on the back burner for MANY reasons, my Buddie Rafael Toledo surprised me the other day with this AWESOME drawing of my stocky, short tempered little character. My friend Damion and I got into drawing a series of caricatured skulls recently. At first I was just doing it for fun...but now I'm beginning to think that this might be a pretty healthy exercise for a caricature artists to per take in. It could help in understanding the structure behind some of are more exagerated caricature designs...plus it's just fun!

I think I'm going to make some more of these, and I'll just keep adding them to this post for people to check out.

Check out this awesome caricature Chris Meesey did of me! This is what I meant in my last post when I said Chris Meesey was a great caricature artists. It's been a blast working with all of these talented artists and cartoonists over at Universal these past couple of months. I consider it to be a huge learning experience, and I'd encourage anyone who's a cartoonists to spend some time doing live caricatures for this very same reason!

Genghis Khan 3

HEY GANG!!! Sorry I took so long in between posts, I've been extremely busy these past couple weeks with work, and work, and work and what not, but I DID however get the chance to knock out a couple Genghis sketches after(you guessed it) work today. I figured I'd post them up here for you guys to see, and to also down play that on going roomer inside of my own head that keeps on telling me I'm lazy! :p
Ok now this pic gives away a lot about the story in one of my two short film ideas, but I'm not sure if it's quite transparent enough for anyone on here to even figure it out. I was trying to get more exaggerated and expressive with the Character this time around...

...By the way, I've keep up the John K lessons and homework over the past few weeks as well but I don't really feel like dominating my Blog with replicas of other peoples work, so I think I'm going to stop posting them on here...

Maybe I'll do one last post a week or two from now showing all of my progress with the Preston Blair books and then I'll be done with it, not really sure.

Genghis Khan 2

I had a lot of fun trying to come up with Thug Designs for the Genghis Film. I was going more for fun and appeal than trying to be "historically accurate", so I came up with a vast array of goof ball characters as you'll see bellow...

This guy was based VERY ruffly on the Mel Gibson Character from Brave Heart...but at a certain point in his design I thought it would be more fun to make him a dog mannered cannibal instead!

This Drawing is still ruff and unfinished, but I still dig it for it's whole "monstrous presence"...
This Thug design was influenced a little by the Fleischers' old cartoon style, and somewhat by Bob Clampett's Indian Joe cartoon. Believe it or not I was kind of thinking Dragon Slayer when I designed this guy...Dirk anyone...no?
I think this guy was in a Sub Way commercial...
Ok with this guy, I had done so many Fleischer influenced designs here that I figured I'd just go all out with it on this dude... I call him Bruno the Primate! :p

HELLO EVERYONE!!! Welcome to my first official blog post... I have a lot of crap that I plan to be posting up here. Stuff ranging from my various cartoon ideas, to life and animal drawings, to attempts at trying all sorts of new drawing techniques and things. I'm trying to improve upon my drawing skills and to harness my "craft" as a cartoonist so if any of you out there consider your self to be cartoonists, artists, or the anything of the like your constructive criticism on the things I will be post will be MOST appreciated! Thanks! ;)

This is a Character I came up with about a year ago...He's obviously a caricature of a infamous historic figure we all know, but it's the personality and persona of the figure that I found so appealing! He's the star of a short film I wrote about a year or so ago and have yet to start production on. One of these days I'll get off my butt and find the time to start animating it. In the mean time though I thought it would be fun to share some of these cartoon ideas I had with you!
These are some Facial expressions I was playing around with for him back when I first designed him...I need to loosen up a bit with the next batch I do for him and get a whole lot crazier with a wider range of emotions.
Here's an ortho I drew for a friend of mine to use as modeling reference...I always intended on doing this film in 2d from the start, but I was a little curious as to what he would look like in the 3d demention, so what the hell!
My good friend Joel Colon modeled this for me in Maya and Z-brush...It came out pretty good for his first pass at it, don't you think?
